In REPD 372 students will obtain a general background on various aspects of human reproduction, ranging from male and female gamete development to pregnancy and birth. The course will serve as a gateway to more advanced courses in human reproduction and development. Students will apply concepts learned through modules to a simulated case study in which a human pregnancy will be followed from the pre-conception stages to parturition and the post-partum period. Evaluations will consist of quizzes, a written essay, a discussion forum and case study group assignments.

Prerequisites

Minimum 3rd year (level 3) standing, one of (ANAT 100/3.0; ANAT 101/3.0; [ANAT 215/3.0 and ANAT 216/3.0]; [ANAT 315/3.0 and ANAT 316/3.0]) and one of (PHGY 210/6.0; PHGY 214/6.0; [KNPE 125/2.0 and KNPE 225/3.0]; [PHGY 215/3.0 and PHGY 216/3.0]).

Learning Outcomes

REPD 372 students will be able to:

Describe key fundamental concepts in male and female reproductive biology to create a framework that can be applied to more complex topics in human reproduction.
Explain the scientific basis of diseases of pregnancy to determine their implications on health in later life.
Critically assess scientific literature and media reports in human reproductive biology to support arguments in oral and written work.
Integrate course content through active discussion with peers to solve case-based problems related to pregnancy, parturition, and other topics in human reproduction.

Assessments

Assessment 1 – Discussion Board Series (20%)

Students will post responses to discussion questions provided by the instructor that are related to module content. Students will also respond to posts created by their peers. They will be evaluated on the quality of their posts, their responses to their peers, and their engagement in academic discussion.

Assessment 2 – Adam and Eve: A Case Study (40%)

In this multi-part assignment, students will be given a simulated case study in human pregnancy. The case study will follow a couple’s journey from diagnosis of pregnancy until parturition and post-partum. Students will be responsible for answering questions that will be used to evaluate their understanding of material covered throughout each section of the course, as well as their ability to research the literature on the topic. This assignment will prompt students to consider unique aspects of reproductive health, normal pregnancy issues, and pregnancy complications specific to their assigned case study.

Assessment 3 – Key Concepts Quizzes (20%)

Upon the completion of modules 1-3 and modules 4-6, students will take a multiple-choice and short answer quiz to ensure they understand the fundamental concepts that have been covered in the preceding modules and can apply such knowledge to interpret and solve problem-based questions.

Assessment 4 – Multimedia Presentation - Group Assignment (20%)

In this assignment, students will connect ideas learned in the modules to create a presentation expanding on a topic provided by the instructor. Such topic will be related to maternal-fetal interaction and pregnancy complications. They will present their findings in a multimedia presentation, and are expected to include research information obtained from relevant scientific papers.

Tutorials

Students can expect to spend approximately 9 – 10 hours a week in study / practice and online activity for REPD 372.
