Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Therapeutics

Courses in this learning track cover both fundamental and advanced pharmacological and toxicological principles. Specifically, these courses examine the mechanism of action and resultant physiological effects of drugs and chemicals on the body, as well as how the body handles these drugs and chemicals. Adverse effects of drugs and toxicants, as well as best methods of assessing these detrimental effects are also taught.

This track requires students to take a total of 7 courses.

PHAR 380 - Drug and Environmental Toxicology

PHAR 380, Drug and Environmental Toxicology explores the human toxicology associated with both pharmaceutical and environmental exposures. Topics include metabolism and mechanisms of toxicity of various pharmaceuticals and environmental pollutants.

PHAR 416 Xenobiotic Disposition and Toxicity

PHAR 416 Xenobiotic Disposition and Toxicity offers an advanced study of chemical disposition and toxicity.

MICR 290 Antibiotic Resistance Lab

MICR 290 Antibiotic Resistance Lab is an immersive laboratory course is designed to give students the opportunity to develop basic research skills, learning about important microbiological and biochemical research techniques and applying them to the study of antibiotic resistance.

LISC 390 - Integrative Laboratory Studies

LISC 390, Integrative Laboratory Studies is a two-week intensive multidisciplinary laboratory course. Students will learn a number of different laboratory techniques, developing skills in scientific methodology, data acquisition, and interpretation.

PHAR 380 Drug and Environmental Toxicology or PHAR 416 Xenobiotic Disposition and Toxicity (whichever was not taken above)

PHAR 480, Drug Discovery and Development

PHAR 480, Drug Discovery and Development covers the life-cycle of pharmaceutical product including drug discover, development, and its transition to a generic or over-the-counter medication.

CRSS 454 - Cardiovascular Sciences

CRSS 454, Cardiovascular Sciences will cover the physiology, pharmacology, and anatomy of the cardiovascular system. Topics include integrative mechanisms and pharmacotherapy involved in short-term and long-term control of the circulation in health and disease.

DDHT 459 Principles of Drug Discovery

DDHT 459 Principles of Drug Discovery provides an advanced study of the early stage components involved in the complex process of drug development including target identification, design and synthesis, structure activity relationships, in vitro and in vivo efficacy determination, biochemical and biological optimization.

DDHT 460 Principles of Drug Development

DDHT 460 Principles of Drug Development is an advanced study of the component parts of the complex process of drug discovery and development and the assessment of human toxicology including drug delivery and formulation, directed toxicology studies, drug disposition, clinical trials, legal issues and regulatory approval.
