Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) degree program students in their 3rd year are eligible for HSCI 591 and 593 (along with 592, 594, 595) and 4th year students are eligible for HSCI 591, 593, 598, and 599 (along with 592, 594, 595). If you have an interest in any of the Health Sciences Research Courses, be sure to familiarize yourself with the following steps.
1. Find a Supervisor.
It is the responsibility of the student to identify and reach out to potential supervisors. Please prioritize the following Queen's Health Sciences academic unit websites to find a research project supervisor. Different faculty members have different levels of familiarity with the research project courses. If you require a syllabus or course information to send to the faculty member you are interacting with, please reach out to the Research Course Coordinator (hsciresearch@queensu.ca).
Note: Although students are permitted to explore opportunities with supervisors outside of the above indicated academic units, researchers from other Faculties at Queen's (e.g. Faculty of Arts and Science, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, and Smith School of Business) will likely have obligations to prioritize research opportunities for students within their own Faculty programs. Thus, we encourage you to reach out first to Health Sciences faculty members as potential supervisors. If you are hoping to conduct a research project at a facility other than Queen’s or remotely with a supervisor not associated with Queen’s, reach out to Research Course Coordinator to discuss.
2. Contact potential supervisors
Students should send this email to potential research supervisors a full 2 academic terms prior to their preferred start date. For example, if you are wanting to take HSCI 598 and 599 in Fall/Winter of your 4th year, send your initial emails in Winter of your 3rd year. Students can copy (cc) the Research Course Coordinator (hsciresearch@queensu.ca) on this email, while also providing a cover letter (in the form of an email), unofficial transcript, and CV to their potential supervisor.
3. Confirm your supervisor with the Research Course Coordinator
Once an agreement has been made between you and a supervisor, please email the BHSc Research Course Coordinator from your Queen's email (and include your student number) letting us know who your supervisor is (and copying them on the email), the course numbers that you will be completing with them, and the academic term(s) that those courses will be taken in. Students must complete this form and submit it to hsciresearch@queensu.ca.
