The use of this policy and procedures to provide false or misleading information or to delay or avoid fulfilling academic requirements constitutes academic dishonesty, and students will be subject to the university’s Academic Integrity Procedures. The institutional response to requests for academic consideration due to extenuating circumstances is based on the principle of good faith, meaning the university and instructors will assume that student circumstances and documented requests are legitimate unless there is compelling evidence to suggest otherwise. Similarly, students can assume that the university and instructors will provide academic considerations that are deemed to be in the best interest of the student, taking into account academic progress and essential academic requirements and standards.
Requests for academic consideration for extenuating circumstances must be submitted through the Considerations Portal as soon as the need is apparent and within 24 hours of a student’s return to academics. Only the impacted deliverables in each course during the impacted period should be submitted. If supporting documentation is required, students are advised to seek appropriate care related to the extenuating circumstance immediately, and to submit documentation through the portal as soon as possible and no later than 12 hours from when the student receives it from the professional issuer. Unexplained delays in submission may be interpreted as an intentional attempt to delay the process and could be subject to further review or investigation. Failure to submit requests and/or supporting documentation in a timely manner may also result in limited academic consideration options or that the request for academic consideration cannot be processed.
Exams/Tests/Quizzes
For students who Request an Academic Consideration due to Extenuating Circumstances for midterm exams or other tests in a course, how the weighting of that midterm exam or test is handled will be at the discretion of the course coordinator, typically in conversation with the student.
For students who Request an Academic Consideration due to Extenuating Circumstances for final exams, the student will be required to write the final exam during the deferred exam period for that term or during the final exam period of the next academic term. This timing is at the discretion of the course coordinator and the length of the academic consideration.
Students, delegates, instructors, and administrators who are unsure if the situation requires an academic consideration or an academic accommodation may contact Accessibility Services (accessibility.services@queensu.ca).
If the outlined options do not feel like sufficient support for you in your current circumstance, reach out to bhscadvisor@queensu.ca to discuss your circumstance.
