PHGY 370, Pathophysiology is an introductory course in which the underlying functional changes of cells and physiological systems will be discussed in association with a variety of disease processes. This course builds on the knowledge and concepts learned in prerequisite physiology courses and uses that foundation to understand how human disease disrupts the function of the major systems of the body, and to a lesser degree, how it is diagnosed and treated.
Minimum 3rd year (Level 3) standing and ANAT100 and one of PHGY 170; IDIS 150; PHGY 210; PHGY 214 or permission of the instructor.
Method of Delivery
Teaching strategies for the online format will include provided online materials, live discussions and individual and group assignment submissions via BrightSpace (onQ).
After completing PHGY 370, students will be able to:
1. Understand the structure and function of major physiological systems in the body and the role of inflammation in order to identify and explain the mechanisms at the cellular and systemic level by which representative diseases occur.
2. Understand the potential causes and mechanisms of disease in order to identify and describe the major signs and symptoms of representative conditions and to differentiate between similar but different diseases.
3. Apply an understanding of normal and abnormal physiological function in order to identify and describe the diagnostic methods and possible treatments for representative diseases.
4. Employ and understand common medical terminology to identify and describe the etiology, pathogenesis, treatment and outcome of disease.
5. Work with peers to collaboratively analyze pathophysiological issues, communicate results, and critique and evaluate their peers’ contributions.
Assessment 1 – Section Tests (20%)
Four section tests will be offered in a multiple choice question format at the end of each learning topic (Physiological Defenses and Respiratory Pathophysiology; Cardiovascular Pathophysiology; Gastrointestinal, Renal and Reproductive Pathophysiology; Endocrine and Nervous System Pathophysiology). These will provide an ongoing assessment of student progress and will help students identify areas of knowledge weakness before major assignments and the final exam. The section tests will be time-limited, and will be open for completion during a designated ‘window’ of time to accommodate varying schedules.
Assessment 2 – Topic Forums: Weekly Group Assignments (20%)
Twelve weekly Topic Forums will provide the student with a chance to apply their knowledge and to interact with fellow students as they work together on the week’s topic. In small groups, students will work together to complete a series of short-answer questions based on case studies related to the week’s topic.
Each group will submit the completed written assignment that will be graded by the instructor or teaching assistants (TAs). Credit will be received based on 1) peer assessment of contribution to the assignment, and 2) quality and content of the written assignment as a whole. Of the 12 Topic Forums, the best 10 will be credited towards the student’s grade (forums skipped will receive a zero).
Assessment 3 – Integrated Group Presentations (20%)
Working in small groups, students will be required to develop a live 20-minute presentation on an assigned disease for presentation to their instructor, TA and other groups within the tutorial sections. Subtopics to be covered in each presentation will include discovery and epidemiology of the disease; cellular mechanisms of the disease; signs, symptoms, and clinical management of the disease; and ongoing research into the disease process. There will be two of these sessions during the semester.
Each student within a group will be responsible for preparing a subtopic for presentation for presentation by another group member
In this way, students will be evaluated based on 1) Peer Evaluation and 2) TA and/or instructor evaluation of the project as a whole. Each group will also be required to pose questions, provide feedback, and evaluate other presentations to facilitate live group discussion and improvement of presentations skills.

Presentation and communication skills to the tutorial section as a whole (between groups)
2) TA and/or instructor evaluation of the group assignment will be based on:
Quality and quantity of the content presented
Cohesiveness of the presentation
Ability to answer posed questions
Participation in group discussion (posing questions to other groups)
Assessment 4 – Final Exam (40%)
The final exam will include well-designed, case-based multiple choice and short answer questions that will test the students’ overall understanding and application of the course material.
Tutorials will be held for each major topic covered in the course. In the tutorial, the TA or instructor will be available to answer questions from students on the concepts covered.
Students can expect to spend approximately 9 – 10 hours a week in study, practice and online activity for PHGY 370.
