What online system is used?
The learning management system, Brightspace (onQ) will facilitate students’ experience within the program by providing a virtual home base for all learning activities. The Entrada platform is being developed to interlink with Brightspace (onQ), to provide unique tracking and assessment functionality to the program, as it offers exceptional customized curriculum mapping, reporting, ePortfolio, assessment, and evaluation features which support the competency framework.
Do students have access to the Queen’s University Library?
Yes. All students enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program, and all faculty and staff involved in its development have unlimited access to Queen’s University Library (QUL) resources through use of the Queen’s University web proxy service. This includes access to all research databases and search engines, journal subscriptions, the Queen’s University Library Catalogue (QCAT), the Queen’s Research and Learning Repository (QSpace), and the Inquiry Toolkit for Online Learning Environments. In addition, reference services and research assistance are available via email and toll-free telephone to allow students to consult with a librarian using online services or from a remote location. QUL provides online news updates via email to keep students, faculty and staff up to date with newest QUL resources, workshops and services.
Can I attend Convocation in Kingston to receive my degree?
Yes. All graduates are welcome to attend the Convocation ceremony in Kingston to receive their diploma. If they choose not to attend, then the degree will be sent to graduates by mail.
Are there specific times for online learning?
Core course content may be completed at any time, day or night. Students have the flexibility to build their learning into their existing daily schedule. There may be specific times for discussion forums or other collaborative work.
What are the admission requirements?
Generally, applicants must have completed a high school diploma and must also have prerequisite courses in English, Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics. International applicants may also have to present a test of English language proficiency. Preference will be given to applicants with the strongest qualifications, and complete admission information is available on the Bachelor of Health Sciences website.
Is it possible to take on-campus courses in addition to the online courses?
No. Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Sciences degree program are limited to the selection of online courses presented on the website. There is, however, an optional on-campus laboratory course offered in the Spring/Summer term of the second and/or third year.
How can I submit an application?
Applications are submitted through the Undergraduate Admission office at Queen’s University. Please visit https://webapp.queensu.ca/admission/apply/ to apply to the Bachelor of Health Sciences program.
Is there an application fee?
Yes. Queen’s Undergraduate Admission collects a $100 application fee.
Can students transfer to on-campus studies?
Any student who has completed 24 units may be eligible to apply to transfer into an on-campus degree program, provided that there is capacity and that minimum GPA requirements are satisfied. Applications to transfer are not automatically approved; it is a competitive process in which capacity and GPA requirements vary each year. Applications to transfer are available each February from the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (www.ouac.on.ca) for the following Fall term.
Will I receive a Queen’s student card?
As an off-campus student, you will not be automatically issued a Queen’s student ID card. However, it is highly recommended you request a student card, especially if you have any proctored final exams, in order to avoid paying a fee. If you would like an off-campus (non-photo) student card, they are available upon request for NEW students as well as validation stickers for RETURNING students. If in the future you become a student on-campus in a degree program you will need to exchange your off-campus student card for a photo ID student card (at no charge). Why would I need a student card?
Queen’s Libraries offer off-campus access. Details are available on the Library website at http://library.queensu.ca/locations-hours/off-campus-access. We have found that the majority of off-campus students do not require an off-campus student card. It’s up to you and we are happy to provide a card if you request one. Is this an accredited program?
Yes, this program is fully accredited by the Ontario Council of Universities.
What degree will be awarded?
Students who complete 90 credits and all Year I-III core courses will receive a Bachelor of Health Sciences (General) from Queen’s University. Students who complete 120 credits and all Year I-IV core courses will receive a Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) degree from Queen’s University.
Is there a difference between an online degree and an on-campus degree from Queen’s?
No, there is no difference. All students are awarded a degree from the Senate of Queen’s University, and the degrees do not indicate how they were completed.
How many instructors and teaching assistants are there per course?
A minimum of one instructor will be assigned to teach one course. When a course’s enrolment surpasses 25 students, a teaching assistant (TA) will be added to increase the resources of the teaching team. Another TA will be added for every additional 25 students enrolled in the course.
Who are the course instructors?
The faculty members involved in teaching in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program are diverse, with each faculty member being selected to teach to their specific expertise defined primarily by their research interests and formal educational training. Each faculty member has substantial research or clinical experience, most holding at minimum a PhD or MD, with the majority running their own research programs. Most faculty also have experience in both undergraduate and graduate teaching.
What are Learning Tracks?
Learning Tracks are selections of themed courses in a particular field of health sciences which give students the opportunity to study an area of specialization in more detail. Any student can enroll in a learning track and they are completely optional.
Can the degree program be completed on a part-time basis?
Yes. Students have the option of completing a Bachelor of Health Science degree on a part-time or full-time basis.
Do students have to take courses in the summer?
Possibly. While there are no requirements to take summer courses in order to complete the Bachelor of Health Sciences degree program, some elective courses offered by the Faculty of Arts and Science may only be offered in the summer. Some of these electives are required in order to complete specific learning tracks within the BHSc program.
How do students select their courses?
Courses are selected directly from the Bachelor of Health Sciences website. Students must register for all core courses, but may choose from a wide selection of optional courses.
What courses do students take?
Approximately two-thirds of the curriculum is comprised of mandatory core courses. These courses are taken by all students in the program. The remaining third are optional courses and students can select from a wide variety across Arts, Science, and Health Sciences.
What is the on-campus laboratory course?
During the Spring/Summer term of second and/or third year, students have the option travel to Queen’s University’s Kingston campus to complete an intensive two-week laboratory course. This optional experience gives students valuable hands-on lab experience in addition to the virtual lab/ simulation/ living lab gained from the online learning environment.
This unique laboratory course will offer students the opportunity to participate in a variety of laboratories, including physiology, pharmacology, anatomy, microbiology, and biochemistry labs. The course will allow students to develop a variety of laboratory techniques and critical thinking skills, learn how to generate and test scientific hypotheses through the execution of well-planned methodologies and further develop data acquisition strategies and skills in scientific communication through writing of lab reports.
How demanding is this program?
Queen’s University has a well-deserved reputation for offering academically challenging degree programs. The Bachelor of Health Sciences program is no different and students will be expected to dedicate significant time and effort to their online learning in order to be successful.
How much do the courses cost?
Tuition Fees for Domestic Students are $656.91 for 3.0 units and $1313.82 for 6.0 units. For International Students, the fees are $3377.49 for 3.0 units and $6754.98 for 6.0 units.
Do students qualify for OSAP?
Students who are registered in the Bachelor of Health Sciences degree program and who take a minimum of 9.0 units per term can qualify for OSAP. Contact Queen’s Student Awards for more information.

How are textbooks ordered?
Textbooks may be ordered through the Campus Bookstore. They are free to pick up in person, or may be shipped directly to students for an additional charge. Shipping details are also available on the Campus Bookstore’s website.
Do online students pay student fees?
Students registered in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program are not automatically charged student fees collected by the Alma Mater Society (AMS), the Queen’s student government. Online students can opt-in and pay student fees should they wish to receive the benefits associated with those fees. Such benefits include the AMS Health Plan and the AMS Dental Plan. Pathways to Health Professions
How does this program prepare students for health professional programs?
This program offers students access to courses that are prerequisites for admission to a wide variety of Health Professional programs including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, dietetics, speech and language pathology, and advanced two-year nursing programs, as well as public health sciences and health sciences graduate programs.
Health Professional programs are increasingly competency-based, meaning that their graduates must achieve and demonstrate competency in specific health-related roles. These competencies have been specifically built into the Bachelor of Health Sciences curriculum, enabling our graduates to demonstrate their achievements in these roles upon applying to a health professional program, thereby strengthening their applications.
Can students apply to medical school after completing this program?
Generally, yes. While medical schools have a variety of admission criteria, this program offers access to courses that are common prerequisites for medical school. It is important that admission requirements of each individual medical school are researched carefully as they may change at any time.
Will this program prepare students for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)?
Yes. If the appropriate courses are selected, they will provide adequate preparation for the MCAT.
How will my online degree be viewed by medical schools?
The Bachelor of Health Sciences degree is issued by the Senate of Queen’s University and is viewed as equivalent to a degree achieved through on-campus study. Furthermore, there is no indication on the student transcript indicating that the degree was completed online.
A transcript is only one part of the application process to medical school. Other factors considered in admission decisions may include performance on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), autobiographical sketch, personal essay, supplementary materials, reference letters, and interviews.
What are the technical requirements for the BHSc program?
To be able to successfully access BHSc program materials and fully participate in the online experience, including discussions, tutorials, and exams, students will need the following minimal technical requirements.
- Access to an Internet connected computer; the BHSc program is accessible on most modern laptop and desktop computers running Windows 7+ or Mac OS 10.8+.
- Soundcard with speakers and a microphone, or preferably a headset.
- Web camera (built-in or external).
- Printer (optional: i.e. for printing notes or study aids).
- Reliable access to high-speed internet, preferably at least 15 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speeds. Due to regular use of streaming video and collaboration, your monthly bandwidth usage may exceed 150 GB of transfer. Please ensure that your internet package can reasonably accommodate this.
- An up to date internet browser such as Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Microsoft Explorer/Edge), with the most recent version of Adobe Flash Player installed.
- Microsoft Office 365 Email, the official Queen’s email service; provided free to all Queen’s students.
- Ability to check messages in onQ, BHSc Portal, and Queen’s email address several times per week (minimum) to be able to stay on track in courses (assessments, deadlines, group work, etc.).
- Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus (provided free to all Queen’s students).
- Adobe Acrobat Reader (available for free download).
- Skype (available for free download).
- Adobe Connect (access will be provided by BHSc when required).
- You may be required to download other course-specific applications; you will be notified upon starting a course if this is the case.
