BMED 470 Principles of ‘Omics’

BMED 470 Principles of ‘Omics’ will build on information learned in BMED 370 as well as explore the integration of genomics with other ‘omics’ such as transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics, and metabolomics data in the study of mechanisms controlling biological processes and disease risk. This course will cover technological advances in omics data collection, computer systems for management and processing, as well methods for the integrative analysis of large-scale omics data in biomedical research.

Minimum 4th year (Level 4) standing and BMED 370/3.0 or permission of the instructor

After completing BMED 470, students will be able to:

  1. To gain a perspective of current research methodologies to identify causative genetic variants underlying mechanisms of disease.
  2. To understand and consolidate research methodologies in the field of ‘omics’ to effectively critique peer-reviewed literature by identifying strengths and limitations.
  3. To develop a hypothesis pertaining to the mechanisms of disease to design a study to identify the underlying causative factors of that disease.

All assessments will be graded using marking rubrics.

Assessment 1 – Section Tests (x5) (50%)

Five section tests will be offered in a short answer format at the end of each learning topic. Section tests will place an emphasis on problem solving and will require the student to use external resources including electronic databases to develop appropriate responses.

Assessment 2 – Group Presentation (20%)

Working in small groups, students will be assigned a primary research paper to critique. This assignment will require students to develop a comprehensive evaluation of the study including its strengths and limitations as well as identify avenues of further investigation. Grading for this assignment will be based on TA and/or instructor evaluation of the report and presentation as a whole and individual presentation as well as peer assessment of individual contribution to group work.

Assessment 3 – Research Proposal Assignment (30%)

This written assignment will require students to identify a relevant topic of interest and develop a research proposal that rationalizes a gap in scientific knowledge, proposes a research hypothesis and outlines appropriate methodology to test that hypothesis. Evaluation by the TA and/or instructor will be based on use of available scientific literature to justify the research hypothesis and appropriate use of methodology/technologies to test the research question.

9–10 hours a week (108–120 hours per term).
